Tungnath Temple

Tungnath Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and located on a high hill near Kedarnath in Uttarakhand. There is a temple of Lord Shiva situated at the height of 12080 feet near Chopta. It is the highest lord shiva temple in World, due to which the name of Tungnath seems meaningful.




The Shiva temple located here is counted among the ' Panchkeedars ' and is worshiped as Bahuparupi Shiva.


Tungnath was considered to be the shrine of Uttarakhand in ancient times.

Under the Mahabharata Vanaparva, the place named Bhritritunga mentioned in the pilgrimages, is probably Tungnath.


The river Rishikulya is said to be flowing near this hill-


'ऋषिकुल्यां समासाद्य नर: स्नात्वा विकल्मष:, देवान् पितृंश्यार्चयित्वा ऋषिलोकं प्रपद्यते। यदि तत्र वसेन्मासं शाकाहारी निराधिप, भृगुतुंग समासाद्य वाजिमेधफलं लभेत्'
'भृगुर्यत्र तपस्तेपे महर्षिगण सेविते, राजन् स आश्रम: ख्यातो भृगुतुंगो महागिरि:

Here this place has been described as the Tapasthali of Bhrigu. Hrisikulya is known as the Hrisiganga River in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

The reason you should visit Tungnath is its Architecture. Marvelous in its design and masterful structure, the Tungnath temple is accepted to be over 1000 years of age. The temple is made for Lord Shiva and some different idols of Goddess Parvati and different gods can be found in the surroundings.

History

This holy temple was found by Adi Shankara and now the monks of this temple are regional Brahmins of Makku village.


During winters, when the area is covered with snow, Lord Shiva is moved to a near village name Muktinath. This village is situated 19Kms from the actual place.
