Dharchula, Uttarakhand

Dharchula is a beautiful city located on the Indo-Nepal border in Pithoragarh district of the state of Uttarakhand. The name of this place is made up of two words in the Hindi language Dhar and Chula which means Dhar i.e. Peak and Chula i.e. Stove. The city is a hilly region whose shape resembles that of a stove, hence the city is called Dharchula.


The city is 90 km from Pithoragarh and it is surrounded by the mountains. To the west of this city lies the snow-covered Panchachuli peak which separates the region from the Jauhar valley. The city has some major tourist attraction centers including Manasa Sarovar or Manas Lake are also famous names.




What is special around Dharchula

Mansarovar is a fresh and freshwater lake located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. This lake has great spiritual significance in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is also believed that the water of this lake washes away the sins of man and he attains salvation.

People of Buddhism are associated with Manasarovar Lake under the name of Anavatapta, according to them, it is a mythical lake where Lord Buddha meditated. A few monasteries are also situated on the banks of this lake, one of which is the Chiu Gompa Monastery which is built on a steep hill.


This lake is considered the source of major rivers Brahmaputra, Karnali, Indus, and Sutlej. Tourists can also visit here to see the Rakshasthal lake which is located to the west of Mansarovar. Apart from this, rafting can also be enjoyed in the Kali River which later merges into the Kalapani of the Greater Himalayas.


There is a Chirkala Dam on this river which is connected to a beautiful lake and a beautiful picnic spot. Tourists visiting Dharchula can also visit Om Parvat, Adi Kailash, India-Nepal border, India-China border, and Narayan Ashram which is located nearby.


How to reach Dharchula

Tourists can hire cabs from Pantnagar Airport to reach here. This airbase is connected to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi by regular flights. The nearest railway station to Dharchula is at Tanakpur. Several state-run buses run by Pithoragarh to Dharchula.

Tourists who wish to visit Dharchula visit here during winter, during which the weather here is comfortable.
