Karthik Swami is one of the holy tourist places of Rudraprayag district. Situated at a distance of 38 km from the city of Rudraprayag, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva.


Located at an elevation of 3048 meters above sea level, this place is surrounded by the mighty Himalayan ranges. According to the Purana story, once Lord Shiva asked his two sons to go around the whole universe and declared that whoever comes here after the first round will get the first opportunity to worship the parents.


Lord Shri Ganesha, the second son of Shiva, won the competition by circling his parents (his parents were the universe for Shri Ganesh), which angered Karthikeya. Then they gave the bones of their body to their father and meat to their mother. These bones are still present in the temple which is worshiped by thousands of devotees. Located on the Rudraprayag - Pokhari road, this temple can be reached by trekking 3 km from Kanak Chauri village.

Lord Karthik is worshiped in North India as well as South India, where he is known as Karthik Murugan Swamy. The sound of the bells of the temple can be heard up to about 800 meters. To reach the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, devotees have to travel about 80 stairs from the main road. The evening aarti or evening aarti is very special here, during this time there is a huge gathering of devotees. The Maha Bhandara is also organized here, which attracts a lot of attention to tourists and devotees.

Karthik Swamy Temple is located in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, where you can reach with the help of all three modes of transport, the nearest airport is Jolly Grant located in Dehradun. From the airport, you can reach Rudraprayag directly by bus or taxi and easily reach the temple from there. For railway service you can resort to Rishikesh railway station. If you wish, you can also reach here easily through roadways, Rudraprayag is well connected to the big cities of the state by better roadways.
