Purana Mentions
Uttarakhand gets its name in Puranas and other ancient literature. 'Garhwal' is the new name, which is probably due to the fifty-two strongholds here in later times. It is said that before the spread of the Aryan civilization in this region, there was the residence of the Khas, Kirat, Tangan, Kinnar etc. castes.
Due to being surrounded by high mountains, this region has always been safe and in ancient times, many sages built their ashrams in the serene panoramic environment here.
The Mahabharata indicates that Garhwal was ruled by the Pandavas and after the Mahabharata war, they reached the Himalayas on their way to Badrinath in their last days. Arjuna and other Pandavas had visited many places here. Maharishi Vyas had an ashram at Badrinath. As a memorial to the Pandavas, a dance called Pandava is still prevalent among the Gods of Garhwal.
