Pithoragarh, a beautiful city located in the state of Uttarakhand. Pithoragarh is a city cum district located in the east of the state of Uttarakhand. It is bordered by Tibet in the north, Nepal in the east, Almora in the south and southeast, and Chamoli district in the north-west. The city is located at an altitude of 1645 meters above sea level.
Pithoragarh is spread over an area of 2,788 square miles, and almost the whole of Pithoragarh is mountainous and rugged. Pithoragarh is also a governance center. It was the main center of district power under the Chand dynasty rule in Kumaon.

The airstrip is the last railway center to visit Champawat Pithoragarh and Lohaghat district of Naini Saini Tanakpur Kumaon division, here is an 18th-century fort built by Gorkhas which is known as Pithoragarh Fort.

History of Pithoragarh
Pithoragarh's old name is Sorghati. The word sor means - snow. It is believed that there were seven ponds in this valley earlier. The water of the ponds went on drying day by day and plateau land was born here. Due to the plateau land, it was named Pithora stronghold, but most people believe that Rai was the capital of Pithora. This place was named Pithoragarh after his name. Rai Pithora had fought with Nepal several times. This king became famous as Prithvi Shah.
The establishment of Pithoragarh
Pithoragarh was a tehsil of Almora district. Pithoragarh district was born on 24 February 1960 from this tehsil and to keep this frontier district Pithoragarh running smoothly, four tehsils (Pithoragarh, DidiGhat, Dharchula, and Munsiyari ) were made on 1 April 1960.
The importance of this place kept increasing day by day. The government removed Champawat tehsil from Almora district and merged it with Pithoragarh on 13 May 1972 to strengthen the administration. Champawat Tehsil is an area representing the culture of Kumaon. This Kumaon-Champawat region of Katyuri and Chand kings holds special significance.
From the eighth century to the eighteenth century, Champawat has been the capital of the kings of Kumaon.

Earlier Pithoragarh district had five tehsils named DD Haat, Dharchula, Munsiyari, Champawat, and Pithoragarh, but due to Champawat becoming a separate district, now this district has four tehsils named DD Haat, Dharchula, Munsiyari, and Pithoragarh.
In these four tehsils Pithoragarh, there are twelve development blocks named Pithoragarh, DD Haat, Kanalichina, Dharchula, Gangolahat, Munsiyari, Berinag, Munakot, Lohaghat, Champawat, Pati, Barkot which have 87 Nyaya Panchayats, 808 Gram Sabhas, and a total of 2324 villages.
