India has started fortifications along the China border, strengthening the road network in the border areas. The Indian government will double-lane the 202 km-long Grandfu-Samdo route from China border to the very close Samdo border. Land acquisition has started for this. Tehsildar Keylong Anil Kumar said that within two weeks its file for land acquisition will be submitted to the government and the Border Roads Organization (BRO).
The double lane of this route will provide an alternative route for the Indian Army to reach the Samdo border. The danger of Lake Parchu will also be overcome. Till now the army used it as an alternative route but will use it regularly in the coming days. After crossing the Rohtang Pass, the Granfu-Samdo route diverges from the Manali-Leh road after about 14 km towards Lahaul. The Hindustan-Tibet route was damaged in Kinnaur about a decade and a half ago due to the bursting of the Parchu lake.
During that time, the army used the Granfu-Samdo route to reach the Samdo border. The team of Forest, Revenue Department, and BRO are in the process of land acquisition to double lane the 202 km long Granfu-Samdo route. This route is about seven meters wide. An additional 13 meters wide land will be acquired on the roadside for the double lane. This road crosses the Kunjam Pass about 14 thousand feet high. A senior BRO official said that Grandfu-Samdo is on the priority list in terms of road safety. This route has got the green signal for making a double lane. This project will cost crores of rupees.
