In India, women obtained the right to vote since independence, but the legal right to contest elections in panchayats and municipal bodies was achieved through the amendment of the 73rd constitution by the efforts of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
This results in the fact that women have more than 50 per cent participation in panchayats in India today.
