Jyotirlinga: According to the story described in Kotirudra Samhita of Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva keeps visiting pilgrimages from place to place for the welfare of beings.
Also, he resides there in the form of Linga. In some unique places, the worshipers of Shiva worshiped the Bhootabhavana with great devotion.
Lord Shiva, attracted by the love of his devotion, appeared to him and fulfilled his desire of mind. In those places, the invisible (manifest) compassionate Shiva, at the request of his devotees, settled there forever with his parts. All the places where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a linga have attained importance as a pilgrimage and are known as Jyotirlinga.
Lord Shiva in the form of Shivlinga
The entire pilgrimage of jyotirlinga is lingamay and everything is contained in the linga. By the way, the estimations of Shivlingas is tough. Whatever scene is visible or any scene we remember, it is the form of Lord Shiva; there is no other thing than him.
Lord Shiva has pervaded all the three worlds, including Gods, Asuras, Gandharvas, Rakshasas, and human beings in the form of linga only to grace the entire gravitation world. Intending to bless the whole world, they are in different types of lingas in Lord Maheshwar Tirtha and also in different places.
According to Shiva Purana
According to Shiva Purana, the main Dwadash Jyotirlinga are in this way, in which the sin of a human being runs away:
1. Somnath Jyotirlinga
Somnath Jyotirlinga is the first Jyotirlinga 'Somnath' located in Saurashtra. This place is in the Prabhas region of Kathiawar.
2. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga
Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Srimallikarjuna is located on Mount Srisail on the banks of Krishna River in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. It is called Kailash of the South.
3. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is famous as Mahakal or 'Mahakaleshwar.'
This place is in a city named Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, which is also known as Avantika Puri in ancient literature. The temple of Lord Jyotirlinga of Lord Mahakaleshwar exists here.
4. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga; The name of the fourth Jyotirlinga is 'Omkareshwar' or Parameshwara.
This place also falls in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. It is situated on the banks of river Narmada, rich in natural wealth.
5. Kedarnath Jyotirlinga
Kedarnath Jyotirlinga The fifth Jyotirlinga is of Shri 'Kedarnath', who sits on the top of the Himalayas.
Shri Kedarnath is also known as 'Kedareshwar,' who sits on a summit named Kedar. To the east of this peak is the temple of Lord Shri Badri Vishal on the banks of the Alaknanda River.
6. Bhimshankar Jyotirlinga
Bhimshankar Jyotirlinga; The name of the best Jyotirlinga is 'Bhimshankar,' which is located on Dakini.
This place is located east of Mumbai in Maharashtra and north from Poona, on the Sahyadri mountain on the banks of the Bhima River. Bhima river also originates from this mountain.
7. Vishwanath Jyotirlinga
Vishwanath Jyotirlinga; The exalted Lord Shri 'Vishwanath' who is enshrined in Kashi has been called the seventh Jyotirlinga.
It is said that Kashi is the new city in the three worlds, which sits on the trident of Lord Shiva.
8. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga
Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga (Ashtam Jyotirlinga) is also known as 'Trimbak.' It is about eighteen miles from Panchvati in Nashik district.
This temple is situated on the banks of the Godavari river near Brahmagiri.
9. Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga
Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga (Navam Jyotirlinga) is 'Vaidyanath.
This place is near Jasidih railway station in Santhal Pargana of Jharkhand province. This place has been called Chitabhoomi in the Puranas.
10. Nagesh Jyotirlinga
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is a Jyotirlinga tenth named Nagesh, near Gomti Dwarka in the Baroda region of Gujarat.
This place is also called Darukavan. Some people consider Nageshwar Jyotirlinga of Shivalinga located in Aundha village of South Hyderabad, while some people call Jageshwar Shivalinga located in Almora district of Uttarakhand Jyotirlinga.
11. Rameshwar Jyotirlinga
Rameshwar Jyotirlinga is the eleventh Jyotirlinga Shri 'Rameshwar'. Rameshwaratirtha is called the Setubandha Tirtha.
This place is located in the Ramanathan district of Tamil Nadu.
Here the massive temple of Lord Shri Rameswaram is decorated on the banks of the sea.
12. Ghushmeshwar Jyotirlinga
Ghushmeshwar temple is the name of Dwadashawan Jyotirlinga, 'Ghushmeshwar.' Some call him 'Ghritneshwar' and some as 'Ghudrneshwar.'
This place is near the village of Beerulath, about eighteen kilometers from Daulatabad under the Maharashtra region. This place is also called 'Shivalaya.
Concerning the above mentioned Jyotirlingas, the following verse is given in the category 'Rudrasamhita' of Shiva Purana-
सौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथंच श्रीशैले मल्लिकार्जुनम्।
उज्जयिन्यां महाकालमोंकारं परमेश्वरम्।।
केदारं हिमवत्पृष्ठे डाकियां भीमशंकरम्।
वाराणस्यांच विश्वेशं त्र्यम्बकं गौतमीतटे।।
वैद्यनाथं चिताभूमौ नागेशं दारूकावने।
सेतूबन्धे च रामेशं घुश्मेशंच शिवालये।।
द्वादशैतानि नामानि प्रातरूत्थाय यः पठेत्।
सप्तजन्मकृतं पापं स्मरणेन विनश्यति।।
यं यं काममपेक्ष्यैव पठिष्यन्ति नरोत्तमाः।
तस्य तस्य फलप्राप्तिर्भविष्यति न संशयः।।
