Uttarkashi is an ancient pilgrimage located on the route of Gangotri, 18 miles from Dharasu. It is because of Vishwanath's temple that it is named Uttara-Kashi.
Uttarkashi, the picturesque and beautiful place of Uttarakhand, is considered to be the abode of Devadhidev Lord Shankar and it is said that he meditated at this place in the form of a gopi. The place where he did penance is still famous as 'Gopeshwar Mahadev'.
Uttarkashi is 155 km from Rishikesh. The city of Uttarkashi is situated on the banks of Bhagirathi and is famous as a religiously important city. There is a famous temple of Lord Vishwanath here.
The city is full of natural beauty. Here on one side where there are rivers flowing between the mountains, on the other side, there are dense forests on the mountains. Here you can also enjoy climbing mountains.
Uttarkashi was called the city of Vishwanath in ancient times. Later it came to be called Uttarkashi. The term 'Badahat' is used for Uttarkashi in Kedarkhand and Puranas. Vishwanath Temple is mentioned in Badahat in Kedarkhand itself. In the Puranas, it is also called 'Saumya Kashi'.
Ganga-Bhagirathi on the Gangotri road at an altitude of one thousand six hundred twenty-one feet above the sea level in the picturesque valley of the Himalayas is situated on the right bank of the river and is surrounded by the river towards the east and south. It has eighty Ganges in the north and Varana river in the west.
The area between Varana and the eighties is famous as 'Varanasi'. It is also called 'Panchakashi'. It is situated in the valley of Varunavart mountain and Kedarghat in the east and Manikarnika Ghat in the south.
Food and Drink
Vegetarian food is available in most of the restaurants in Uttarkashi. The main food here is Jhangura, Mandua and Bhatt. Along with this, people here also eat Raita and Roti. Some hotels make Garhwali food on special request.
Traffic and transportation
Air: The nearest airport here is Jolly Grant in Dehradun. There are two daily flights of Air Deccan from Delhi.
Train Track: Dehradun is the nearest rail station. There is a direct rail service from Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur.
Roadway: Uttarkashi is connected to the major cities of the country by road. Bus opens from Kashmiri Gate, Delhi to Uttarkashi.
Apart from this, there is a direct bus service to Uttarkashi from Dehradun as well. Buses also open from here to Rishikesh.
