Martand Sun Temple is a famous temple located in Anantnag City in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This temple of Martand is dedicated to Lord Surya.

This temple was built by King Lalitaditya Muktapeed belonging to the Karkotak dynasty. This temple dates back to the seventh-eighth century. This temple was built between 725-756 AD.


The architecture of Martand Sun Temple



The courtyard of the Martand Sun Temple is 220 feet x 142 feet. The temple was 60 feet long and 38 feet wide. There are presently the remains of about 80 cells around it. The main entrance on the eastern side of this temple has a pavilion. The gates had triangular arches (arches), which are characteristic of the architecture of this temple. The architectural style of the Dvamandap and the pillars of the temple is somewhat similar to the Doric style of Rome.
