Kedar Tal | A beautiful lake in Uttarkashi

Located in the lap of beautiful and scenic Himalayas in the city of Uttarkashi is the mighty Kedar Tal, which is 15000 feet above sea level. This beautiful lake is surrounded by Mrigupanth and Thalayasagar mountains, which reflect the beauty of the Tal with its peaks. ⁣

Kedarganga originates from Kedartala, a tributary of the Bhagirathi. Somewhere calm and sober, this river makes its way through huge boulders and rocks. ⁣

You can see a clear reflection of Thalayasagar peak in this lake. Since there is no facility on the way to Kedar Tal. Therefore one should go here with complete preparation. Kedar Taal is replete with many amazing elements of nature.⁣

What is Kedar tal known for? ⁣

⁣Known as ‘Shiva’s Lake’, Kedar Tal is one of the highest lakes in Uttarakhand.

This glacial lake is located at an elevation of 4,912 metres above sea level in the Uttarkashi district.

Kedar Tal lake is formed by the melting of Kedar glacier, thereby giving birth to Kedar Ganga River which is an important tributary of Bhagirathi River.


It is said that after drinking the poison emanating from the churning of the ocean, Lord Shiva pacified the gruesome flame of his throat by drinking the water of 'Kedar Tal'. ⁣

In garhwali, it is also called as the 'Taal of Achraras'. ⁣

How to visit Kedar Tal? ⁣

You can reach Rishikesh or Haridwar which is well connected by roads and rail. One can also go by taxi from nearby cities. ⁣

The journey from Delhi to Rishikesh is about six hours. Uttarkashi from Rishikesh can be reached only by road in about 8 to 9 hours. ⁣



It is advisable to stay at least one day in Uttarkashi. Cheap hotels are available here. ⁣

The distance from Uttarkashi to Gangotri is 99 kilometres. This journey takes 5 to 6 hours. Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Hotel, Sadhus' Dharamshalas and other small hotels are available for stay in Gangotri.⁣
