Indian Navy





The Indian Navy is a maritime part of the Indian Army, with its glorious history, the defender of Indian civilization and culture.

Equipped with 55,000 navies, it is the fifth-largest navy in the world, engaging in military exercises with other major allies of the world, prominently guarding the security of the Indian border.

Naval Fleet

When India got independence on 15 August 1947, India's naval fleet had old warships, which were only worth coastal patrolling.


First Aircraft Carrier

INS 'Vikrant' was India's first aircraft carrier. It was introduced to the Indian Navy in 1961 and retired in January 1997.


Indian Navy Day

It is celebrated on 4 December to commemorate the Indian Navy's victory over the Pakistani Navy in the 1971 war.


Other information

Since independence, the Navy has so far designed and built more than 81 warships and submarines at shipyards in Mumbai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Goa.


Introduction to Indian Navy



Indian Navy is a marine force part of the Indian Army, which is the protecting the Indian civilization and culture with its glorious history.


Equipped with 55,000 navies, it is the fifth-largest navy in the world, engaging in military exercises along with other major allies of the world while prominently guarding the security of the Indian border.


The foundation of the modern Indian Navy was laid in the 17th century when the East India Company established the East India Company as a maritime force and thus in 1934 the Royal Indian Navy was established.


Indian Naval Headquarters New Delhi is under the control of the Chief Naval Officer-Admiral.



The Indian Navy is deployed under the command of 3 regions, each of which is controlled by a Flag Officer.


The headquarters of the Western Naval Command is located in Mumbai in the Arabian Sea.


The Southern Naval Command is in Kochi (Cochin), Kerala and is also located in the Arabian Sea.


The Eastern Naval Command is in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in the Bay of Bengal.


History of Indian Navy




The Indian Navy was commissioned on 5 September 1612. On this day the first fleet of fighter ships (warships) of the East India Company reached the port of Surat. The fleet was called 'The Honorable East India Companies Marin'. It was later called 'The Bombay Marin'.


During the first world war, this navy was renamed as 'Royal Indian Marin'. By the Second World War, the Royal Indian Navy had about eight warships. By the end of the war, the number of ships had risen to 100


India became a Republic on 26 January 1950 and on this day the Indian Navy abandoned the Royal name in front of its name. At that time, the Indian Navy had 32 naval vessels and about 11,000 officers and naval personnel.




The first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy, the Real Admiral I.T.S. There were halls. First Indian Navy Chief (CNS) Vice Admiral R.D. Katari, who took charge on 22 April 1958.
